#1 Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

About the Book

Ariadne by Jennifer Saint
Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

Title: Ariadne

Author: Jennifer Saint

Genre: Historical fiction, Retelling

Publisher: Flatiron Books

Type: Standalone

Pages: 320

Goodreads rating: 3.8/5

Following the story of Ariadne, the forgotten princess of Crete and the sister of the Minotaur, Ariadne gives a much-needed voice to the girls who never had one in that world of Gods and Heroes and Monsters. When Theseus, the Prince of Athens, comes to kill the monster and be the hero he was always meant to be, Ariadne sees an opportunity to finally leave the four walls of her palace. But when she eventually does go, she isn’t sure if it was the right decision. Especially since she left her sister behind in that ruined kingdom.

Why do we recommend this book?

A gorgeous retelling of the story of Ariadne, Theseus, and Dionysus, so much so that I am willing to accept this story as canon. Reading about women getting the recognition they deserve is always the best, and it was so lovely to see Ariadne being much more than just a maiden in love. Like, how come people call Theseus a hero when he was only able to slay the Minotaur with the help of Ariadne?

#2 Athenian Series by Conn Iggulden

About the Book

Athenian Series by Conn Iggulden

Title: Athenian

Author: Conn Iggulden

Genre: Historical fiction, Adventure

Publisher: Penguin Books

Type: Series

No. of Books: 2 (ongoing)

Books in it: #1 The Gates of Athens, #2 Protector

Goodreads rating: 4.3/5

Athenian is a fiction novel series set in ancient Athens during the war between them and the Persian empire. It deals with various horrors of the battle and its impact on both sides—also, the political implications behind every decision taken by the military. Xanthippus is a warrior, proud to have contributed to protecting democracy. Until ambitions, conspiracies and corruption threaten to destroy the whole composition of the government during such a sensitive and crucial period.

Why do we recommend this book?

Iggulden is pretty amazing at writing battle scenes. To be honest, it might be hard for some to get used to all the terms and phrases, especially if you are not aware of Greece’s political and mythological history (and its cities), but halfway through the novel, it doesn’t matter. The book sucks you in with its very raw depiction of war and politics until you are left wanting more.

A Thousand Ships is a series of anthologies consisting of various stories about various women that ultimately intersect with each other as they face a decade-long war come to an end. Except nothing has ended for them. Their sufferings have only just started where some are taken as war-captives, others are left to rot, but all trying to find a will to live, whether by seeking revenge or just freedom. Stories of women who were there, but whose voice never reached anywhere, A Thousand ships follow along with some known characters – like Hecuba, Cassandra, and Clytemnestra – and some unknown ones, Penthesilea and Andromache – in their story.

Why do we recommend this book?

Legit loved all the retellings of the war of Troy we got told from women’s perspective. It’s such an exciting concept that might have become excessively over-used in recent times and never fails to make one feel things. Probably because though the era has changed, the conditions of women remain the same in many parts of the world. A Thousand Ships is a must-read for anyone wishing to learn about this part of the myth.

You’ll find this book to be full of witchy magic, power-hungry people, love, loss, and drama.

Why do we recommend this book?

In the start, it took me a bit of time to pick up, but then once it caught my attention, it was fun to read. The ending was also very unexpected, and I didn’t see it coming. I loved how it took me by surprise.

A gorgeous retelling of the classical Greek myth of Helen of Troy, Daughter of Sparta is a very innovative and inspiring read. Helen and Klytemnestra were easy to root for, and honestly, for anyone who is a fan of the battle of Troy (which everyone is, c’mon. It’s one of the best myths ever known) ‘s a must-read. Genre: Young Adult, Retelling

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Every seven years, Agon starts – a hunt during which nine Gods are forced to become mortals while the descendants of ancient bloodlines hunt them. It’s a punishment from Zeus for a past rebellion. If any hunter manages to kill a God, they can get their divinity and immortality, thus becoming a new God. Melora is from the line of Perseus. She has cut herself odd from the hunt by living in hiding for years. Ever since the last hunt left her the only surviving person in her family. But when she discovers Athena, one of the few remaining original Gods bleeding in front of her home, she is flung back into the hunt again, though she has friends and an alliance this time. But everything comes at a price, and in this game of Gods, she will have to pay a huge price.

Why do we recommend this book?

Please, how cool is the concept of Agon? It’s like Hunger Games, but Greek mythology style. Loved the idea, not to mention the character dynamics, writing, and callbacks to our favorite myths. A definite must-read for Percy Jackson fans.

#7 Mythos: The Greek Myths Retold by Stephen Fry

About the Book

Mythos by Stephen Fry
Mythos by Stephen Fry

Title: Mythos: The Greek Myths Retold

Author: Stephen Fry

Genre: Fantasy, Mythology, History

Publisher: Michael Joseph

Type: Standalone

Pages: 416

Goodreads rating: 4.3/5

A retelling of famous Greek myths, the popular writer and comedian Stephen Fry put together a collection of short stories in this novella which is more of a recounting than fiction. Fry writes witty interpretations of popular Greek stories about Gods and their creations. Both the long-term mythology readers and newcomers to the genre would appreciate the humor and sass of Stephen Fry in this collection of short stories.

Why do we recommend this book?

Greek mythology has always been weird, and Stephen just made it ten times more bizarre and a hundred times funnier. Seriously, no kidding, it’s hilarious. It might not be fiction, but it’s too good to pass on. If you are new to Greek mythology and would like an easy guide, this book is for you. There’s no way you would be able to forget anything about the weird gods after reading this book.

#8 Pandora’s Jar: Women in the Greek Myth by Natalie Haynes

About the Book

Pandora’s Jar by Natalie Haynes

Title: Pandora’s Jar: Women in the Greek Myth

Author: Natalie Haynes

Genre: Fantasy, Mythology, History, Retelling

Publisher: Picador

Type: Standalone

Pages: 320

Goodreads rating: 4.3/5

Women have been an integral part of the mythological history stories for ages, yet they have been reduced to being the damsels, seduced by the Gods, or won over by Heroes. Haynes retells their story to showcase their power and how they have never needed heroes to save them in the first place. The voices that were overshadowed because of the patriarchal society finally come to light in this stunning collection of short stories starring both – the Goddesses on Mount Olympus and the princesses and priestesses of the Land.

Why do we recommend this book?

The Greek myth lovers know all about the misdeeds of Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena, but this non-fiction collection of short stories by Natalie Haynes has us all looking at them in a new light. And the women of myth who were left behind to exhibit the accomplishments of the Greek heroes or were cursed because they fell for the Gods – they all find their voices in the pages of Haynes’ work. A sort-of feminism story collection that finds its footing in the history of one of the most famous cultural foundations of the world – Greek Myth – Pandora’s Jar is a must-read.

It’s pretty similar to the book Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods, but there are heroes in this book instead of gods. You will find out stories of Perseus, Hercules, Atlanta, Otrera, Daedalus, and many more. It’s filled with bloodthirsty characters and lots of gore with a sarcastic commentary on the side.

Title: Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods

Author: Rick Riordan

Genre: Greek Mythology, Children’s Literature

Publisher: Disney Hyperion

Pages: 417

Type: Standalone

Goodreads rating: 4.5 / 5

This book is a short story collection of sorts. In Percy Jackson and The Greek Gods, the author explains how the world was created. And then gives readers his own take on a who’s who of ancients, from Artemis to Zeus. There are two to three stories involving each God.

P.S. I recommend you read this book first to understand the Gods mentioned in other Percy Jackson’s adventures better.

Why do we recommend this series?

This book was recommended to me by one of my friends. It is a great book; I loved it. It was my first book in the mythological genre. And I feel I couldn’t have chosen any better book for myself for venturing into the mythical world.

#12 The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

About the Book

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Title: The Song of Achilles

Author: Madeline Miller

Genre: Historical fiction, Fantasy, Romance, LGBT

Publisher: Ecco Publishers

Type: Standalone

Pages: 378

Goodreads rating: 4.4/5

Inspired by the plot of The Iliad, The Song of the Achilles follows Achilles, a demi-god, and Patroclus, a young prince, as they are brought together by Fates and whose friendship, love, and humanity is tested by the Gods. Achilles and Patroclus form a bond that risks the Gods’ wrath, but when the battle of Troy commences, ambitions and temptations bridge a gap between them. Even though Patroclus follows his friend to the war because of his fear for him, they are yet to understand just how cruel the Fates can be.

Why do we recommend this book?

Not a book for everyone, The Song of Achilles is to date one of the best greek-mythologically inspired fiction that sticks as close to the original myth as it could. The depiction of gods and heroes, society and culture, is done brilliantly. The best thing about this book is, without a doubt, the writing and the setting that raises the anxiety factor a notch.
