We Were Liars Book Review

This book’s plot is about Cadence looking back over her summers with the Liars (her cousins). However, the best thing about this book is its dramatic and stunning plot twist.

We Were Liars had one of the best plot twists I’ve read. This book does not have a cliffhanger ending, so all questions are answered, and things are explained quite well.

Surely all the characters are well-written. But Cadence was the most interesting character. In fact, I enjoyed watching her grow up throughout her teenage years. Her feelings for Gat were adorable.

While Gat’s philosophy about everything was insightful and deep, he came off as very mature and wise beyond his years. Johnny was the humorous one, and Mirren was the more serious of the Liars.

“We are liars. We are beautiful and privileged. We are cracked and broken.”

E. Lockhart, We Were Liars

I enjoyed reading about everything from the perspective of Cadence, which made it feel like I was living the story instead of just reading about it.

The language opted for narration is simple, lyrical, and poetic, which enhances the reading experience. The story of We Were Liars may have been intriguing, but the content was not very substantial.

There didn’t seem to be any morals in the storyline. Things happened throughout the story, although it was a mystery, nothing was truly thought-provoking.

I found it to be slow-paced. Most of the time, I was reading about the lives of rich, privileged teenagers. Everything was so mundane, with unnecessary details provided in the narration.

“The universe is seeming really huge right now. I need something to hold on to.”

E. Lockhart, We Were Liars

Overall, We Were Liars is a decent read, although it is a forgettable one. But the plot twist is what saved this book from being completely flat.

This book isn’t your typical young-adult mystery thriller. I have mixed feelings about it. Neither loved it nor hated it. But I recommend you read this title without too many expectations; that way, it would probably be more enjoyable.

Conclusion

Rating: 3.5/5

Recommendation: I recommend this title to those who enjoy thrillers with an amazing plot twist.
