Persuasion is the last novel completed by Jane Austen before her death. This Regency-era novel centers on marriages of a small circle of middle-class families, with particular attention to women’s social and private lives. It narrates the story of a second chance, the reawakening of love between Anne Elliot and Captain Frederick Wentworth. Eight years earlier, Anne was persuaded by a well-wisher not to marry Wentworth because of his low status. He returns after all these years from a war with money and social acceptability. He is now an eligible suitor. And Anne discovers that time has not weakened the strength of her love for him.

Persuasion Book Review

Persuasion is a quieter tale of romance set in Bath, England. The themes of this novel are persuasion and commitment, which are represented by the unwavering love Anne and Captain Wentworth have for each other. It has all the usual Austen virtues – fine prose, wittiness, and sharp social criticism.

The assortment of characters has been done incredibly. The plot contains exciting individuals, heroes, and villains in the ideological war between Anne and Captain Wentworth. The protagonist Anne is quiet and reserved yet clever and practical. She seeks love but is conscious of her duty to her position. Wentworth values firmness of mind in women. These protagonists represent a contrast to each other.

“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope…

I have loved none but you”.

Persuasion by Jane Austen

The title of the novel is straightforward and concise. One may think that the writer did not pay much attention to it, but that’s the beauty of Jane Austen. This clear title encompasses the essence of the writing. Moreover, it gives an idea about the central theme of the book.

In my opinion, the only point where it faltered was its humor. This book lacks one of the crucial elements of Austen’s usual writing style. It is not entirely devoid of it but fails to meet the standard of her other books in this regard.

“Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death.”

Persuasion by Jane Austen

It is a novel tinged with sadness and filled with hope. As all of Austen’s male characters are, Captain Wentworth is charming and handsome, with good manners. It is a literary masterpiece with pages full of social commentary and passionate love.

Conclusion

Rating: 4.5/5

Recommendation: Persuasion would make a perfect read for all romance and classic literature enthusiasts.
