Kiva lives in Zalindov, the most famous and notorious prison. She was brought there with her father as a young child and has grown up as the prison healer, a talent she learned from her father before he died. She knows the rest of her family outside the prison are alive, rebelling, and will eventually help her escape. When the rebel queen is captured, it is up to Kiva to keep her alive long enough for her to undergo the Trial by Ordeal: a series of elemental challenges against the torments of air, fire, water, and earth, assigned to only the most dangerous of criminals. With an incurable plague sweeping Zalindov, a mysterious new inmate fighting for Kiva’s heart, and a prison rebellion brewing, Kiva can’t escape the terrible feeling that her trials have just begun.

Why do we recommend this book?

The storyline? Super original. I mean, I couldn’t get enough of the characters and their backstories—there’s just so much depth. And the ending? Buckle up, because the last 20% will have you glued to the page. So many things happen, it’s insane! Oh, and if you’re a sucker for maps in fantasy books (I know I am), you’ll love this. Not one, but TWO maps. It’s like they knew exactly how to spoil us. Seriously, you gotta give this one a try.

Having recently escaped prison, Kiva is ready to put her new plan into action: reuniting with her family to overthrow the throne–those responsible for putting her in jail in the first place. However, as she settles into the palace, hiding her true intentions, she realizes that the royal family is not as evil as her own family had led her to believe. Torn between the rebels and her found family at the palace, both of whom care deeply for her, Kiva must decide where her loyalties lie and which group she will betray.

Why do we recommend this book?

This one’s addictive. Like, full-on can’t-put-it-down addictive. There’s so much scheming and plot twists, you’ll be guessing what’s going to happen next. It’s set right after the first book, but it’s got a bit of a calmer vibe. You get to see the main character, Kiva, trying to figure out where her loyalties lie. Plus, there are some awesome new characters that join the story, like Naari, Tipp, and even some royal peeps. And, oh, the slow-burn romance between Jaren and Kiva? It’s like watching a perfectly timed dance—so satisfying!

Rating: 4/ 5

Recommendation: Absolutely, YES.

She’d failed them. All of them. And now she was paying the price. Kiva thought she knew what she wanted—revenge. But feelings change, people change… everything has changed. After what happened at the palace, Kiva is desperate to know if her friends and family are safe and whether those she wronged can ever forgive her. But with the kingdoms closer to the brink of war than they’ve ever been, and Kiva far away from the conflict, more is at stake than her broken heart.

Why do we recommend this book?

Okay, let’s be real, it’s better than the second book, but it doesn’t quite beat the first. Still, a fantastic conclusion to the series! Kiva’s character development? Chef’s kiss. There’s action, emotional moments, quests—everything you’d expect to wrap up this epic trilogy. The ending fits the characters perfectly, tying up all those loose ends just right.

Rating: 5/ 5

Recommendation: Absolutely, YES.
