Suppose there’s anything more iconic than Paris Fashion Week. In that case, it is a heated altercation with Miranda Priestley during the Paris Fashion Week, ending in Andy bidding her an expletive-filled goodbye. But, a decade after this spectacle, Andy’s not just a to-be bride to a gorgeous media tycoon but also the editor of her exclusive bridal magazine–The Plunge.

And she owns this magazine with none other than Emily. The name Miranda Priestley has not appeared anywhere in Andy’s life in forever, but when she gets comfortable—she comes back. Miranda wants to take over their successful venture, but Andy is doubtful. But Emily is ecstatic about the offer. So amidst this conflict of interest, what lies in the future of this magazine? Is Miranda out to get Andy, or is this strictly business?

Revenge Wears Prada Book Review:

I am a die-hard fan of The Devil Wears Prada, but that does not make me biased toward the commendable sequel. On the contrary, this book deserves your attention. And attention-seeking it is, right from its title. Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns is an attractive and clickbaity title that is consistent with the storyline.

The plot doesn’t attempt to show Andy as a young and frivolous woman anymore—she’s now with different responsibilities. A more mature Andy trying to build and balance her career and family is a treat to read about.

The characters and lively interactions between them have always been Weisberger’s forte, and they continue to drive the plot forward. Bringing Miranda adds some spice and keeps me waiting to find out if Miranda would be villain-like even this time.

The suspense surrounding the magazine keeps the readers on their feet and creates some emotionally intense scenes—because so much is at stake for all the characters. The twist around this is not wholly unexpected, but surprising nonetheless. In addition to Miranda, old favorites make cameo appearances—taking the plot a notch higher.

“Some sort of weird, shared inexplicable draw to fall in love with people who hurt and betray us.”

Lauren Weisberger, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns

Lauren Weisberger brings back the signature humor in her writing that dominated the first novel—making the story feel nostalgic and instantly recognizable. It doesn’t feel like a long interval between the book, its film adaptation, and this sequel. The narrative sucks you right into it at the beginning all of a sudden. The writing is well-paced and mostly never falters, making it a fun read.

The friendship between Andy and Emily becomes an endearing character in the book, more than anything else. The stark differences in their personalities give their company an entertaining and comical edge, and they don’t feel forced. But alas, it becomes too good to be true—and you will realize this when you read.

Weisberger takes note of that because she has kept her characters consistent. The fact Emily worships the ground Miranda walks is a detail Weisberger has not forgotten and seamlessly incorporates into her plot. Andy remains the way she was—cautious and uncompromising. This shows that although the characters have evolved, they intrinsically continue to be the people we knew in the first book.

“How could this woman still haunt her? It had been nearly ten years since she bolted from Paris and her soul-destroying stint as Miranda’s assistant at Runway. She had grown so much since that dreaded year, hadn’t she?”

Lauren Weisberger, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns

Although the novel is enjoyable, the romantic subplots between Andy and her fiance and the potential love interest she meets at the end feel too convenient and unnecessary. The romance is predictable, and there is not much romantic chemistry. Moreover, for a novel that’s supposed to be centered around Miranda exacting her revenge—we don’t get to see too much of her.

A little more of her presence would have excited the drama, making the novel even more enjoyable.

Besides that, the book delivers everything it expects—laughs and satisfaction. Andy’s story comes to a well-rounded end, and you will finish the reader with a smile. It is a quick read that disconnects you from your environment, and you can read and enjoy it, perhaps when you take a long flight somewhere!

“With Emily’s business contacts and print magazine experience and Andy’s writing skills and expertise with all things wedding related, they conceived and designed a uniquely beautiful product.”
