#4 Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh

About The Book

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by [Allie Brosh]
Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh

Title: Hyperbole and a half

Author: Allie Brosh

Genre: Nonfiction, Autobiography

Publisher: Gallery Books

Type: Standalone

Pages: 371

Goodreads rating: 4.2/5

This is a nonfiction book in which Allie Brosh, a blogger, uses her drawings and anything she thinks she finds suitable and pairs them with a very witty, humorous, and dry, sardonic prose storytelling. The book is a short compilation of several stories she wrote on her blog. In the book, she tells the uncomfortable situations in which she was and mostly the things that happened hilariously and charmingly.

Why do we recommend this book?

There were so many funny instances in this graphic memoir where I laughed aloud. However, the chapters portraying the author’s childhood and the dogs were the best. Not only this, but she also talked about some serious issues, such as when she was suffering from depression. However, the drawings are elementary, and somehow they worked in this collection. Moreover, this book will take you totally by surprise with its wit and dry humor. So, if you are looking for funny books to read to fill your life with happiness, then give this book a try.

#5 My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Title: My Sister, The Serial Killer

Author: Oyinkan Braithwaite

Genre: Thriller, Mystery

Publisher: Doubleday Books

Type: Standalone

Pages: 226

Goodreads rating: 3.9/5

It is a tale set in Nigeria following two sisters, Korede and Ayoola. Ayoola is beautiful and always gets everything she wants. In contrast, Korede is hardworking and beautiful but not as attractive as her sister. One night when Korede’s dinner is interrupted by a distress call from her sister, she knows what’s expected of her: rubber gloves, beach, nerves of steel, and a strong stomach. It is the third time this has happened when her sister got rid of her boyfriend in self-defense, and the third time Korede has to deal with the mess. Due to her love for Ayoola, she hasn’t contacted the police. Things start to change when her sister starts dating a doctor with whom Korede works as a nurse and has been in love with him for years. Will it be the final straw for Korede?

Why do we recommend this book?

By looking at the synopsis, you can tell how ridiculous it sounds. It is. It is ridiculously hilarious. A sister helping the other to hide the boy’s body she killed is weird and executed in a significant way that makes it believable. The sisters are different and love each other to the moon and backβ€”this book questions whether blood bonds can be so strong as to hide their wrongdoings. It is among those books guaranteed to have a funny and ridiculous situation, so read this to have a fun time.

This book was great. As I said before, Andy Weir has a way of writing characters that you instantly get a liking for and want them to succeed. It also has great humor. First Son, Alex Claremont-Diaz, is a prince this side of the Atlantic. Prince Henry is also a prince. The privileges of being international socialites also mean having specific duties. One that neither of the two boys was able to maintain. When photos of a confrontation between the two long-time nemeses at a royal wedding leaked to the tabloids, it threatened American/British relations. And the plan for damage control? The two need to stage a fake friendship. As Alex’s mother kicks off her reelection bid, he juggles a secret relationship with the prince that would most probably (definitely) derail her campaign. Is the two’s love worth the sacrifice they would have to give? Just how much can love conquer before giving out?

Why do we recommend this book?

Enemies/Rivals to reluctant fake-friendship to real friendship to lovers trope! Oh, how I wish we had more of these. Anyways! Casey McQuiston outdoes herself with this book – the closeted representation is impressive. And the chemistry between Alex and Henry was out of the world. Truly a masterpiece from its cover, title, characters, and plot to the central theme and conflicts, Red, White & Royal Blue is a must-read if you love LGBT romance books and love to read funny books with hilarious and awkward situations.
