Book Review of Pet Sematary by Stephen King -Favbookshelf

Pet sematary book review.

Known to be one of the best (scariest) books in the horror genre, Pet Sematary is Stephen King’s version of the re-telling of ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ by W.W. Jacobs (both are as freaky as they come). In this article, we have given a spoiler-free review of the Pet Sematary book.

Nominated for a World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1984, Pet Sematary follows the story of Louise and his family, who have recently moved to a house near the small town of Ludlow. Lousie makes a friend in Jud, whom he considers a father figure, who shows him the Pet Cemetary (misspelled ‘Sematary’), where the town’s children bury their deceased pets. But there is a far more sinister secret lurking behind the Sematary, and when Louside discovers it, his life goes downhill. And when his pet cat dies, and he goes to the Sematary to bury it, it is when he inadvertently unleashes terror upon his own family.

“Cause what you bury, is what you own. And what you own… always comes home to you.”

Book Review of Pet Sematary

I love Stephen King. Despite that, I found some of his works to be tamer; he has yet to disappoint me. So, of course, I thought I would absolutely love Pet Sematary, whose greatness everyone is talking non-stop about. Well, did I not say that King doesn’t disappoint?

Starting with its cover – almost all of its versions are amazing (that cat one? I have creeps). But without a doubt, the cemetery one is its best one. Both the cover and the title’s font look so haunting! I also loved the title (after a few days, my autocorrect understood, too) because of what it represents in the plot. The Sematary isn’t normal, so obviously, it can’t be named normally.

As for the writing, must I really say it? Even Stephen’s way of adding exclamations and full stops are contributing factors to the creepiness and horror elements of the book. Like almost all of his other works, his language isn’t complicated, but it’s also not simple.

The plot was a gorgeous blend of realism and fantasy; human nature was quite prevalent as a factor responsible for the whole mess. I liked how if you analyze the book properly, deep down, the main antagonist of the story wasn’t actually some magical satanic entity, but a human’s grief and how far he is willing to go to end it.

I also loved all the characters. Louise and Jud were both brilliant humans, complex and flawed, and despite all their wrong decisions, they were relatable. And that’s truly scary for me because I can see myself making those same decisions in their place.

“And the most terrifying question of all may be just how much horror the human mind can stand and still maintain a wakeful, staring, unrelenting sanity.”

Stephen King

Yeah, maybe this book would be that limit for many people. If you have a weak heart, seriously, don’t read this book. And if you have already read it once, for the love of God and yourself, don’t re-read it.

Conclusion

Rating: 5 / 5; Our Rating Guide

Recommendation: 100% recommended to horror lovers.

If you liked Crossroads by Laurel Hightower or Ferocious by Jeff Strand, you would love Pet Sematary too. As for me, this book confirmed what I already knew – zombie animals are not for me.
