People we meet on vacation are a second chance, opposites attract, and friends to lovers romance. Writing the review of the people we meet on vacation is a happy moment for me.
It is filled with mutual pining, inside jokes, and fantastic chemistry. We think that if two best friends became lovers, they would not find anything new about each other because they already know each other from the inside out. But that is not the case.
Even after knowing someone for a lifetime, you will find something new about them every day. So here’s a spoiler-free review of the People we meet on vacation.

Poppy and Alex have an unlikely friendship. Poppy is free-spirited, quirky, and outgoing. Alex is quiet and prefers to stay indoors with a book. They meet during orientation week in college and become friends after an awkward car ride home. After college, they mostly live far apart; however, every summer, they take a trip together and go on exciting adventures. Until one summer, everything falls apart.
People We Meet on Vacation Book Review
A classic friends-to-lovers story but with a twist: what happens when your best friend becomes a stranger? Sounds a bit heartbreaking, right? But also kinda beautiful? That’s exactly what happens here, and trust me, you’re going to get all the feels.
So, you’ve got Poppy and Alex. Poppy’s this free spirit living the NYC dream as a travel writer for a fancy magazine, while Alex is back in their small Ohio hometown, living a much quieter life. He’s all about that picket-fence, settle-down vibe. And even though their lives are super different, every year, they carve out a week for a vacation together. Just the two of them. But—plot twist—they haven’t spoken in two years because…well, something went down.
Now, Poppy seems to have it all, right? The dream job, the travel perks, the city life. But she’s still…unhappy. And guess what? The last time she felt truly happy was when she was with Alex. So, what does she do? She plans this epic “let’s-fix-our-broken-friendship” vacation to try to reconnect with him. The problem? Their connection is still there (yay!), but they want totally different things in life (boo!).
It hurts to want it all, so many things that can’t coexist within the same life.
Emily Henry
The book jumps between present-day and flashbacks, which I loved because it really helps you get into their friendship. You see how they met, how they clicked, and how they became that close. It’s also where the mystery lies—why did they stop talking? What exactly happened? You keep flipping pages to figure it out!
But hey, it’s not just all fun and games. There’s some real depth here too. It hits on how even achieving your dream goals can sometimes feel empty. You know, that whole “it’s about the journey, not the destination” thing? It dives into that. And there’s this bit about rediscovering happiness by reflecting on when you last felt it. It’s oddly relatable.
“Wherever you are, that’s where I belong. I’ll never belong anywhere like I belong with you. No matter what I’m feeling, I want you next to me. You’re home to me”
Emily Henry
Now, not everything is perfect. I did think Alex could’ve used a bit more backbone at times—he was almost too nice, you know? And Poppy? She had her moments of being a little immature. But honestly? It didn’t ruin anything. I still really enjoyed it.
Conclusion
Rating: 4/ 5
Recommendation: Undoubtedly. 100%
If you’re into that whole friends-to-strangers-to-lovers thing with a good dose of emotional tension, you’re going to love this. It’s angsty, it’s got history, and when they finally reconnect, it’s electric.
YES, you should definitely read it. You’ll be just as hooked as I was!
