Henry Page has never been in love. He was happy to concentrate on his grades, get into a halfway-decent college, and finally become editor of his school newspaper. Then Grace Town walks into his homeroom, and he knows everything is about to change. Grace is not who Henry imagined as his dream girl. She walks with a cane, wears oversized boy’s clothes, and rarely seems to shower. But when Grace and Henry are chosen to edit the school newspaper, he quickly falls in love with her. It’s evident that something about Grace is broken, but that seems to make her even more beautiful to Henry, and he wants to help her put the pieces back together. This book is funny and heartbreaking, a powerful reminder of the bittersweet happiness of first love.

Our Chemical Hearts Book Review

Our Chemical Hearts is an incredibly well-written, heartbreaking story about love, loss, heartbreak, and grief. It deals with psychological issues such as depression, loneliness, and heartbreak that everyone has gone through at some point in their lives. Young love is an integral part of the plot. The story and characters were great.

All the characters seem normal on the surface, but deep down, they are plagued by an inner dilemma. They felt so well-fleshed out and realistic. Henry craves interactions and experiences, while Grace is physically and emotionally damaged. These characters add depth to the story. The way they portray mental health issues makes the plot realistic and makes these imaginary teens seem real.

“Love doesn’t need to last a lifetime for it to be real. You can’t judge the quality of a love by the length of time it lasts. Everything dies, love included. Sometimes it dies with a person, sometimes it dies on its own.”

 Our Chemical Hearts, Krystal Sutherland

The depiction of grief and guilt is apt, as we see Grace holding the remains of someone who is no longer alive. You can sense her hesitation as she befriends Henry. At one point, it felt almost toxic because Henry bore the brunt of the relationship, but it expresses how you can fall in love with an idea rather than reality.

The dialogue is remarkably well-written. The profundity of each sentence underscores the author’s sensitivity. In addition, the discussions of topics such as first love, guilt, coping with grief, etc., pique the reader’s interest.

“The best thing the universe ever gave us is that we’ll all be forgotten. […] I kinda like the idea. That when we die, despite any pain or fear or embarrassment we experienced during our lives, despite any heartbreak or grief, we get to be dispersed back into nothingness.”

Our Chemical Hearts, Krystal Sutherland

The story of Henry and Grace is not meant to be perfect, and the element of heartbreak has been gracefully realized. The plot development is sufficient to hold the reader’s attention. However, some scenes of the narrative seem a bit bleak at times. Overall, it is a bittersweet story about an unfinished romance and realism.

Conclusion

Rating: 4.5 / 5

Recommendation: This title is for anyone who enjoys reading young adult novels with elements of pain and grief told fluidly.
