Mexican Gothic Book Review

Mexican Gothic is a stunning book that combines all the features of a classic gothic tale with a thrilling race against time. I was on the edge of my seat and scared to turn the page the entire time.

The cover shows a young lady with a deep wine-colored dress holding withered flowers in her arm. Everything on this cover has symbolism, from the yellow flowers to the pattern on the wallpaper, for the readers that will come to light as they continue reading the story. The title is in simple white color that stands out from the vibrant illustration of the cover.

Garcia writes some badass female characters in her book, and Noemi is no exception. She was a character to root for throughout the entire book. Unlike the Gothic heroines that are melodramatic, Noemi is a force to be reckoned with and holds the plot on her shoulders.

“Noemí’s father said she cared too much about her looks and parties to take school seriously,
as if a woman could not do two things at once.”

This story also includes a cute romance that brings so much hope to the readers. Not a big fan of the romance genre, but it fits in naturally with the story and does not feel forced.

“But they were young that morning, and they could cling to hope. Hope that the world could
be remade, kinder and sweeter.”

The gothic writing of this book is beautiful. The author puts an attraction to the most disgusting of things imaginable. Readers who are fans of the descriptions of architecture in gothic tales will love this book. That being said, some scenes can be disturbing for sensitive readers.

The story’s pace can be slow-moving at times, and some scenes feel like they are the repetition of others.

Conclusion

Rating: 4/5

Recommendation: This book is for lovers of gothic fiction with solid characters. If you mind disturbing language and gore, this book is not for you.
