It is always such a pleasure to read whenever the enemies-to-lovers trope is written well. There is so much tension when characters learn they have feelings for someone who is their enemy. They refuse to accept it most of the time but eventually just give in to their heart. And again, reading the best enemies to lovers books? So. much. fun.
We’ll recommend ten must-read books for this trope in today’s post. So, let’s get started!
#1 Beach Read by Emily Henry
About the Book
Title: Beach Read

Goodreads rating: 4/5
Augustus Everett and January Andrews are both writers. However, they are opposites, not just in their choice of genres but also in their overall personality, such an essential trait in the books of enemies to lovers. She believes in happily ever after, while he is a fan of killing his characters. Since college, they have been each other’s nemesis, and neither can ever see that changing. The only common thing between them is that they are stuck together for the next three months as they try to overcome their writer’s block, which entails exchanging their genres. The two agree to help each other complete their books (begrudgingly), but just how far would they be able to keep their relationship barely professional when those butterflies have started to make their existence known.
Why do we recommend this book?
Opposites who have been rivals since college! Enemies-to-friends-to-lovers! And books in books! Please, how am I supposed not automatically to fall for this? This book has such an adorable slow-burn romance, and the emotional impact of the darker themes had me floored. Gus and Jan were such a hoot together. We also had such lovely interactions between January and her father, and their bond was so emotional for me to read. It’s honestly one of the best books of enemies to lovers of 2020 for me.

Set in a richly-imagined fantasy world, Nina Varela’s debut novel is a sweepingly romantic tale of love, loss, and revenge that challenges what it means to be human and is one of the best enemies to lovers books.
Why do we recommend this book?
This book is simply unlike any fantasy you might have read. It is so unique and complex, but at the same time, the world-building is just incredible to read about. Crier and Ayla are both characters with their complexities, and they are developed well throughout the story. It was also really fascinating to see Crier’s belief system transforming the course of this book. It’s an incredible read, especially if you’re a fan of fantasy books with sapphic characters at the center.

#5 Enemies With Benefits by Roxie Noir
About the Book
Title: Enemies With Benefits
Author: Roxie Noir
Genre: Contemporary, New Adult, Humor
Publisher: Modern Mammoth
Type: Standalone (Book 1 in Loveless Brothers)
Pages: 418
Goodreads rating: 4.1/5
Elijah Loveless and Violet Tulane have been enemies since kindergarten. Violet couldn’t have been happier when Eli left their small town of Sprucevale after graduation to follow his dream career. But now, years later, he is back. Even worse – they have to work at the same company. Elijah is still as insufferable as he has always been, and Violet still hates him just as much as she always did. And when their boss announces a grand prize for the staff of the years, their old rivalry is back in full swing, except that something in their equation has changed this time. As the physical attraction simmering just below the surface explodes between them, the two are quite obviously too appalled. But it’s gotten too hard to keep their hands off each other, so what do they do? Enter an enemies-with-benefits arrangement. What could go wrong?
Why do we recommend this book?
All their flashbacks that highlighted their childhood rivalry had me dead (with laughter, of course). The two were brutal, but they were also hilarious. Of course, now that they are adults, they are still hilarious. But they are also soooooo hot! In this case, their chemistry was on fire, and I loved that we didn’t have any misunderstanding trope here (these two genuinely disliked and distrusted each other forever). I also appreciated that we got both the protagonist’s pov (these are the best in romance novels). This is the first book in the Loveless Brothers series, which is fantastic overall categorizing the enemies to lovers books.

The wealthy aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries. No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. Years ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until an accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless if she wishes to save him. But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the future of time itself.
Why do we recommend this book?
One of the most enjoyable things about this book is the concept. How many books have you read where time is used as a currency? And that cover is just gorgeous! While this may feel similar to other YA fantasy books because of the tropes, there are a lot of unexpected plot twists that pull you into the story.

Jasmine is sure that her dream of figure skating has gone down the drain until the help comes from the least likely places. Jasmine has spent years hating her best friend’s older brother. Ivan Lukov is the epitome of annoying, but as she spends more time with him, Jasmine realizes that there lies a highly compassionate person behind his snark and indifference. And that beneath their banters and arguments, chemistry neither acknowledged is sparking.
In this coming-of-age, slow-burn romance novel, one girl who has given up on her dreams learns to love herself while the boy teaches her to love the world.
Why do we recommend this book?
When we say slow-burn, we mean slow-burn. It is one of the enemies-to-lovers books, though Jasmine and Ivan’s chemistry was undeniable. The way they gradually progressed and how comfortable their relationship became when we reached the book’s last pages had me swooning entirely. And Ivan is honestly the world’s perfect boyfriend. I want him.

Daria and Penn belong to two completely different worlds. Though something simmered between them years ago, something that might have been affection at one point, now all they want to do is ruin each other. Penn is back for revenge, but the more he wars with her, the more he sees who she is beyond the tough girl, mean bitch facade she puts on. That doesn’t mean he could ever forgive her, though. She has destroyed too much for that, except that the feelings buried deep inside their hearts have reared their head again. And no matter how much they fight it, fate has a way of playing pranks in the most unassuming manner.
Why do we recommend this book?
Now, this is what I call legit enemies-to-lovers. Daria and Penn are the most complex characters I have ever read about, and their relationship was so angsty! I loved Daria and how she accepted and embraced all her flaws. Calling her mean is an understatement. She was cruel. But the more I read, the more I started rooting for her. I wanted her to find happiness. Her chemistry with Penn was undeniable.

#11 Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned. Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony. The war between witches and Church is ancient, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made. And love makes fools of us all.
Why do we recommend this book?
From their first interaction, you can tell that Lou and Reid have such intense chemistry. They banter intensely, but as the story progresses, you can tell they care for each other. There are also some humorous scenes accompanied with such beautiful writing. The world-building and magic systems are straightforward to understand. This is one of those fantasy and enemies to lovers books that is a definite must-read.

#12 Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Title: Shatter Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Genre: Young Adult Science Fiction (Dystopia)
Publisher: Harper
Type: Shatter Me book #1
Pages: 338
Goodreads rating: 3.92/5
Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days. It was an accident the last time she did, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal, but the world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases destroy the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color. The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war—and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now. Juliette has to choose: Be a weapon Or be a warrior.
Why do we recommend this book?
This is one of the older books on the list, published in the early 2010s. As a result, it bears similarities to many tropes commonly used in dystopian YA of that period. But Tahereh Mafi’s writing is magnificent, and the world-building is just top-class. The romance is also incredible, and while it does feel a little insta-love at the beginning, it develops well throughout the story.

#13 The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences. As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters and Faerie itself.
Why do we recommend this book?
Holly Black is a master at world-building, and her take on the world of the fae is so interesting to read about. Rather than focusing on the romance aspect, this book also focuses on the political intrigue and the internal conflicts in gaining power. The writing style is also easy and simplistic to understand. The Cruel Prince is one of the books that deserves the hype it gets and is undoubtedly one of the best enemies to lovers books.

She is happy to be an anonymous drudge, so long as it keeps anyone from guessing the dangerous secret she hides. But when Malini accidentally bears witness to Priya’s true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled. One is a vengeful princess seeking to depose her brother from his throne. The other is a priestess seeking to find her family. Together, they will change the fate of an empire.
Why do we recommend this book?
There aren’t enough words to describe how utterly beautiful this book is. Tasha Suri’s beautiful writing and incredible world-building skills created a world-inspired ancient Indian epic and history. The two go all out with their pranks and sabotage to make the other break the relationship off. Except that now that their superficial facade has fallen off, the two find themselves genuinely enjoying the company of each other.
Why do we recommend this book?
One of the best lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romance novels out there! It’s hilarious, romantic, filled with family dramas, and the second chance love shines gloriously here. Even though I read the prologue chapter’s synopsis, I couldn’t imagine these two characters becoming enemies. They were so adorable! But then I read further, and I am glad that they did because their being enemies was hilarious. It was pretty slow at times and mildly tedious by the last half, but it was nevertheless an entertaining enemies to lovers books.
