Book Review of Ascension of the Phoenix

This book, Ascension of the Phoenix, is part of the ongoing series, The Phoenix Trilogy. It is the first book in the series. The second book is The Dragon of Russia was released in 2021.

When I first picked up this book, I did it without any expectation of what the book is going to be about. And I was honestly surprised at how much I liked Jessica Piro’s writing. Her writing was very impressive and the story was fast-paced and fun.

I liked how the author had such a good grasp of the police jargon, which made the story feel more authentic. Even though the book was fast-paced and thrilling, it was also very emotional as it delved into the psyche of the main character, Leila, who went through a devastating loss. The story was bittersweet and I completely enjoyed myself reading it.

The cover of the book is very attractive and vibrant. It has a phoenix all set to take flight and it is very appropriate for the plot of the book. The title is related to the story too. But you would learn its relevance much later in the story. I loved both the cover and the title as they both are well suited to the book.

Now let’s talk about the start and end of the story. The start was great as the story began with a chase. So it set the pace for the book and also put in the thrill factor from the very beginning. The end was the complete opposite in pace. It was bittersweet yet full of promises. There are a lot of loose strings and the ending promises to keep the excitement for the next books in the trilogy.

I really liked Piro’s writing style. I loved how easy it was to read the book. It flowed really well. The actions were very descriptive and helped me imagine the scene in my head. It was also funny at times as the characters indulged in light banter. I really enjoyed the smooth flow of the writing. The pace of the story was also perfect as it started with a thrill and slowed down by the end. There was not a single dull moment.

My favorite aspect of the book has to be the strong female protagonist. Leila Wells is such a strong female character, not just physically but mentally. I loved how Piro explored Leila’s strength. Leila was put into the direst situations and she falls and rises every time, just like a phoenix. What I loved about the character the most was that she is strong but also so humane and kind. She always puts others before herself but does not lose her individuality along the way.

However, I would have loved to know more about the supporting characters. I felt that they were not that well-rounded off and lacked depth. More background about them would have helped in forming a perception about them or even sympathizing with them. Also, the villains lacked a backstory and their motive was not clear.

Also, I found the plot to be quite predictable at times. I could guess what the characters are going to do next and that sort of a bit ruined the thrill and the mystery aspect of the book.

Overall, the book was a fun and exciting read filled with action.
