Recently graduated, Lilly is new at Boston. She hasn’t had the best life, but at least she is living by as well as she could. Then she meets the handsome, charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid. Is she finally being rewarded for holding on for so long? Ryle is stubborn and assertive but also intelligent and a sweetheart. Ryle is willing to try commitment for her, and that’s more than Lilly ever expected. They are happy, but Lilly can’t help but feel unsure about their relationship. Especially as she never got closure from her ex-lover. Her seemingly perfect life shatters when he returns; the past Lily so badly wanted to forget has started to shadow her present and future. It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover follows Lilly’s journey as she slowly heals from the wounds of her past and learns to love herself.
Review of It Ends With Us
I have loved all of the books of Colleen Hoover before, but It Ends With us? She outdid herself. Love is a tiny word to describe what I feel for this novel.
Ok, first of all, the book starts slow, and that’s not a bad thing. It takes its own time to introduce the characters and their dynamics, about Lilly’s past and the events that made her what she is now. The pace stayed consistent throughout the book, gradually uncovering every aspect of the plot and the characters.
The book cover is honestly so brilliant. Lilly’s story is overflowing with metaphors. I loved the symbolism of crushed flowers on the front cover (Lilly is a florist, so the flowers are a good choice). And the title is so misleading it’s genius.
Hoover’s writing style is so profound. It is descriptive, but at the same time, it’s not exaggerating. Sure it was predictable, and halfway through, we knew what was going to happen by the end, but this wasn’t a mystery novel that needed any plot twist. Seeing it all unfold right in front of our eyes was still pretty distressing though. Her writing made me feel every emotion that Lilly went through.
You go into this book thinking it’s going to be a romance, but the plot is so much deeper. It’s about love, whether it be love for your boyfriend, a friend, your mother, or even yourself. I loved Lilly as a character. She gave her everything into every relationship she had. The plot unraveled gradually, and slowly you start to realize that you are getting much more than you expected from the story – it’s honestly genius.
My heart broke for Lilly and her mother, and the constant cycle of abuse that they suffered because of the people they loved, was so beautifully described. I especially loved that we got into the psychology of the people who put up with the abuse continuously, all because they are unable to stop loving that person. They don’t get used to it. It’s because they continue to hope that the other person will change.
“Just because someone hurts you doesn’t mean you can simply stop loving them. It’s not a person’s actions that hurt the most. It’s the love. If there was no love attached to the action, the pain would be a little easier to bear.”
– Colleen Hoover
There was romance, yes, but the best aspect of this book wasn’t that for me. It was hands down the relationship between Lilly and her mother. As far as characters go, Lilly and her mother took the trophy for the best-written ones.
The book could have done with a bit more character depth for the other side characters, though. That’s the only thing I didn’t like in the book. And the last few chapters had too many things going on that I didn’t know how anything will tie up till the conclusion. Thankfully it was a useless concern because the ending was beautiful, but yeah, the last 1/3rd (minus the end) was a little mess.
Overall, I thought this was a fantastic read, with beautifully written character dynamics and an awesome and very realistic portrayal of abuse victims.
If you liked Me Before You by Jojo Moyes and Swear on This Life by Renée Carlino, you would definitely love It Ends With Us.

“You can stop swimming now, Lily. We finally reached the shore.”
Please, I will cry. Not just because of this quote, and also because Hoover is releasing a sequel to this book this year! I cannot do this, you guys.
