Love and Other Words is one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read. It is an enthralling read about friendship, first love, and broken hearts. Therefore, this article reviews Love and Other Words, one of the most cherished books ever.

Macy Sorensen is a new pediatrics resident, planning her wedding to a single father whom her best friend had met only a few times. But then she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life and the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. There was a time when Elliot was Macy’s whole world, but he broke her heart the same night he declared his love. This book is narrated in alternating timelines between Then and Now. Then Elliot and Macy started as friends and grew into something more, and Now They met again as strangers. There is so much history and emotion between them.
Love and Other Words Book Review
Okay, so imagine this: you meet a guy who’s absolutely perfect for you—like, swoon-worthy, soulmate-level perfect. That’s Elliot for Macy. And the way Elliot loves Macy? Ugh, it’s so pure, so intense, that it kind of makes you jealous. I mean, where are the Elliots of this world, right?
The story kicks off when Macy’s dad buys a summer house next to Elliot’s. From there, their friendship blossoms through their mutual love for books and deep conversations. They’re basically best friends who hang out in a cozy little closet (yes, a literal closet) during the weekends. It’s their own little hideaway.
But, of course, something tragic happens (because what’s a love story without a twist?) that causes Macy to just vanish from Elliot’s life for a whopping 11 years.
“Favorite word?” he whispers.

I don’t even hesitate: “You.”
Now, here’s where it gets interesting—the book jumps back and forth between timelines. You see Macy in her present-day life, where everything’s calm and predictable. She has the dream job, a super-stable fiancé, and it looks like she’s moved on. But then BAM! She runs into Elliot again, and the sparks just fly. I’m talking “first love” kind of sparks that never really go away. So, naturally, the story rewinds 15 years to their teenage days, and you get to witness the magic from the very beginning.
And let’s not forget their adorable little tradition—every time they met as kids, they’d ask each other for their favorite word of the day. I mean, could they be any cuter? But as you’re flipping the pages, you’re dying to know: What happened? Why did Macy disappear? Why did everything fall apart when it was so perfect?
“I never got to fall out of love. I just had to move on.”

Now, I’ve got to admit, there’s a bit of a twist towards the end that left me feeling… well, conflicted. I won’t spoil anything, but it was one of those moments where you’re torn between, “Wow, that hit hard,” and “Wait, did that really just happen?” It had its clichés, sure, but man, it took me through a rollercoaster of emotions.
Oh, and Macy’s relationship with her dad? I absolutely loved it. Her mom had this whole list of life lessons she left for Macy after she passed, and those little rules? Gold. It was such a beautiful way to show that her mom’s love and wisdom stuck around, even after she was gone. And the love between Macy’s parents? Seriously, all-encompassing.
“It never occurred to me that love could be anything other than all-consuming. Even as a child, I knew I never wanted anything less.”
Christina Lauren, Love and Other Words
So, long story short—this book is the perfect, cozy, feel-good read. I loved it from start to finish.
Conclusion
Rating: 5 / 5
Recommendation: Undoubtedly. 100%
If you’re into stories about best friends becoming lovers, second chances, and that “I-can’t-put-this-down” kind of romance, then this one’s totally for you. Buckle up, because Elliot and Macy’s story will keep you hooked!
