Book covers are important as they create a strong first impression for readers with just a glance. Book covers can have distinct typography, hand-drawn illustrations, doodles, meta-design, minimalistic layout, absurd form, or some are so iconic, and some books are just so pretty that you’d buy them just for the cover.
So, in honor of judging a book by its cover, here are our 21 favorite and incredible book covers (subjectively and objectively) you should definitely check out!

I couldn’t find a better way to kickstart this list except with The Great Gatsby. This was the only book cover designed by the Spanish artist Francis Cugat. He caught the attention of Fitzgerald, and it is said that the cover actually influenced the book a little. This “Great American Novel” has one of the most recognizable and iconic book covers in the history of American literature.

Another iconic book cover—Jaws by Peter Benchley, has cover designs by two artists, Roger Kastel and Paul Bacon, and the one in the image is designed by the latter, who also designed other notable book covers like Catch-22, Slaughterhouse-Five, etc. This chilling and terrifying book cover became synonymous with the book itself (and the movies). Truly iconic.

#4 Against Happiness by Eric G. Wilson
About the book
Title: Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy
Author: Eric G. Wilson
Cover Artist: Jennifer Carrow
Publisher: Sarah Crichton Books
Pages: 166
Goodreads Rating: 3.25/5
We are addicted to happiness. More than any other generation, Americans today believe in the power of positive thinking. But who says we’re supposed to be happy? In Against Happiness, the scholar Eric G. Wilson argues that melancholia is necessary to any thriving culture, that it is the muse of great literature, painting, music, and innovation―and that it is the force underlying original insights.
So enough Prozac-ing of our brains. Let’s embrace our depressive side as the wellspring of creativity. It’s time to throw off the shackles of positivity and relish the blues thatmake us human.
Why do we recommend this book?
This cover cleverly uses a blinding yellow background that contrasts with the only text, the title, and the author’s name written in an inverted smile. Its minimalistic but profound design conveys the book’s message effectively.

#6 The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
About the book
Title: The Bell Jar
Author: Sylvia Plath / Victoria Lucas (pseudonym)
Cover Artist: Shirley Tucker
Publisher: Heinemann
Pages: 244
Goodreads Rating: 4.04/5
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther’s breakdown with such intensity that Esther’s insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.
Why do we recommend this book?
There have been many beautiful and haunting covers of the book The Bell Jar over the years, but nothing beats this classic designed by Shirley Tucker for Faber and Faber publications edition. Notably, this edition is the first to publish the book under Plath’s real name. Bearing hypnotic concentric circles for the most part of the jacket, it symbolizes the depressive state of the protagonist, Esther. This cover has gone on to become one of the most popular and recognizable book covers ever.

Cover Artist: Jack Smyth (for original cover)
Publisher: Faber & Faber
Pages: 376
Goodreads Rating: 4.13/5
It is the summer of 1979. An English painter, Mr. Lloyd travels to a small island off the west coast of Ireland. He doesn’t know that a Frenchman follows close behind. Jean-Pierre Masson has visited the island for many years, studying the language of those who make it their home. He is fiercely protective of their isolation, deems it essential to exploring his theories of language preservation and identity.
But the people who live on this rock—three miles long and half a mile wide—have their own views on what is being recorded, what is being taken, and what ought to be given in return. Over the summer, each of them will wrestle with their values and desires. Meanwhile, all over Ireland, violence is erupting. And there is blame enough to go around.
An expertly woven portrait of character and place, a stirring investigation into yearning to find one’s way, and an unflinchingly political critique of the long, seething cost of imperialism, Audrey Magee’s The Colony is a novel that transports, that celebrates beauty and connection, and that reckons with the inevitable ruptures of independence.

So when her mother and sister disappear, leaving Saba and her father alone in Iran, Saba is certain that they have moved to America without her. #20 Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde
About the book
Title: Vagabonds!
Author: Eloghosa Osunde
Cover Artist: Khari Turner
Publisher: Riverhead Books
Pages: 320
Goodreads Rating: 3.68/5
As in Nigeria, vagabonds are those whose existence is literally outlawed: the queer, the poor, the displaced, the footloose and rogue spirits. They are those who inhabit transient spaces, who make their paths and move invisibly, who embrace apparitions, old vengeances and alternative realities.
Eloghosa Osunde’s brave, fiercely inventive novel traces a wild array of characters for whom life itself is a form of resistance: a driver for a debauched politician with the power to command life and death; a legendary fashion designer who gives birth to a grown daughter; a lesbian couple whose tender relationship sheds unexpected light on their experience with underground sex work; a wife and mother who attends a secret spiritual gathering that shifts her world. As their lives intertwine—in bustling markets and underground clubs, churches and hotel rooms—vagabonds are seized and challenged by spirits who command the city’s dark energy.
Whether running from danger, meeting with secret lovers, finding their identities, or vanquishing their shadowselves, Osunde’s characters confront and support one another, before converging for the once-in-a-lifetime gathering that gives the book its unexpectedly joyous conclusion.
Why do we recommend this book?
As the author herself said, this book cover is an “explosion of colors.” With striking colors and illustrations forming into a sort of abstract blend, this cover is more than captivating.
