The afternoon of 12th March was Bombay’s worst nightmare. Subsequently, a series of explosions haunts Bombay to date, and Black Friday gives you insights into the criminal mind as revealed in Zaidi’s interviews with some of India’s most notorious names like Dawood Ibrahim, and Tiger Memon, among others. The characters we meet are so compelling: the terrorists, the corrupt law enforcement agents who abet the plot, the investigators who will stop at nothing, and the people’s resilience of Mumbai.

Black Friday: The True Story Of The Bombay Bomb Blasts Book Review

This book is more than just a true crime expose; it mirrors our society and its self-destructing carelessness, lack of civic responsibility, and corruption. It is a conclusive indictment that we are our enemies. It shows us the dance of death that unfortunately played out on 12th March 1993 on the streets of Mumbai. When you read this book traces the controversy to its beginnings in the aftermath of the 1992 riots and painstakingly recreates the entire plot in threadbare detail.

Certainly, Zaidi’s writing is captivating, and you can’t keep your book down for a minute throughout the read. He captured a lot of information in 304 pages which is impressive. A crime story is a boring read if the pace of the book is too slow or fast to understand. But Zaidi perfectly managed to keep their readers engaged. As a journalist, he knows the pulse point of the readers, and we can see that in all his books that way, he represents the information as not news-like but information with lots of emotions, whether it s hate, love, or empathy. It shows us the true flows in our system and the harsh impact of people not doing their jobs right.

“Man’s most dangerous enemy is the one he was once closest to.”

I have seen and read lots of interviews with police officers. Media persons and civilians involved in this case were investigators, news coverage reporters, or someone who lost someone in that incident. Although throughout those conversations, one thing was common, people were afraid, and it took years to recover from that wound. Also, a Hindi-language crime film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, Black Friday, was based on and released with the same name. Hence this movie introduced me to Zaidi’s world, and I immediately became a fan of his writing.

“As Napoleon Hill said, necessity may be the mother of invention but it is also the father of crime.”

Although my views about this book are very positive, I’ll say that this book may feel uncomfortable at certain points. It should be because it details such a sensitive topic of terrorism, corruption, and the psychology of criminals. Still, I highly recommend this book as it is an excellent book by Zaidi and a must-buy for any non-fiction reader.

Conclusion:

Rating: 5/5

Recommendation: I highly recommend this book to those who love the true crime genre and like reading Mumbai mafia stories.
