Book Review of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Don’t we all love celebrity gossip? Well, this book has it. This book is phenomenal. We meet Evelyn Hugo, now 79 and an Oscar award winner, six times divorced and widowed from her seventh marriage. Her adult daughter recently passed away from breast cancer. With everyone close to her either gone or dead, she decides to tell the tale of her life. The story goes from there.

Let’s start with the cover first. The cover is well designed, keeping in mind the famous Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo. With the stunning green party gown and the blonde hair, you get a glimpse of what Evelyn was when she was young and how beautiful she might have been to be a star sensation at the age of 79. By looking at the cover, you get the perfect ’80s vibes. The title focuses on the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo as it was the most controversial topic for a woman to go through so many husbands in the ‘80s. As you read the book, you will understand the title’s significance.

The pacing of the story is very smoothly done. The beginning, the middle, and the end-all feel connected, and there is not a single part that feels disoriented from the rest. As a character-focused and plot-driven reader, the story satisfied me with the plot progression and its character building.

The book’s plot was a perfect combination of romance and what it means to reevaluate one’s own life, perspectives, prejudices, and preconceived notions about others. I loved how the book took deep topics like what it means to be strong enough to take what you want even when the situation is not in your favor and how to rely on others when you have been a lone wolf for your entire life.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is a master when it comes to writing a character. She makes the characters in such a way that they almost seem real. Not only Evelyn Jones but also the character of Monique was well written, and the character interactions were well done. She writes straightforwardly and in an easy-to-follow way, making everyone invested in the story quickly.

“When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things.”

Evelyn Hugo

There are so many things that you get to learn from her. Firstly, she shows the reader how to do anything in their power to get what they want. The best thing about Evelyn is that she is unapologetically herself. She is an image of being confident, doing what you believe in, and taking things by hook or crook. Don’t get me wrong, she is anything but perfect, but she shows that it is being human to make mistakes.

Secondly, Evelyn shows the reader not to be afraid of who they are and who they love and never let the fear or society decide whom they should love. This book has a significant LGBT representation handled with great attention and care. It has the most incredible friendships that I have ever seen. You see how these people in the harsh competitive environment of Hollywood still form such unbreakable bonds. You must read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo review to know more.

The book keeps one invested and hooked from start to end. There was not one moment where one feels bored.

Conclusion

Recommendation: Are you serious?? Definitely read it!!

I adored this book.

“No one is just a victim or a victor. Everyone is somewhere in between. People who go around casting themselves as one or the other are not only kidding themselves, but they’re also painfully unoriginal.”
