When Father Gorman, an innocent priest, is killed on his way back after hearing the confession of a dying woman, the police are at a loss. They retrieve a list of random names from the priest’s shoe. The people on the list have no connection until many die an apparently natural death. An occult murder seems impossible, except in the bygone era of witchcraft. But that’s precisely what the women at the Pale Horse claim to be doing. Mark Easterbrook visits the inn and witnesses a seance by the three ‘witches.’ He must get to the bottom of this mystery in time to prevent another death. With the help of an underground volunteer and a valuable clue from an unsuspecting Ariadne Oliver, Mark makes a shocking discovery.
The Pale Horse Review
The Pale Horse is one of those books that totally sucks you into a world where superstitions feel, like, real. Even if you’re the most logical person on the planet, this story will mess with your mind a bit, in the best way possible.
The cover? Super simple, but it’s got this chilling vibe. Just a signboard with the title and a horse galloping across it, and somehow, it nails the mood of the story. You already know something spooky is going down.
Now, let’s talk about the plot. It’s a masterclass in suspense! The story kicks off with this whole supernatural murder myth, and alongside it, there’s a plot to reveal what’s really going on. It’s one of those slow builds that keeps you glued to the page, wondering what’s going to happen next. And just when you think you’ve figured it out, a new twist pops up. The mystery around Mr. Venables and his illness? Total brain teaser. And when Mr. Osborne, the pharmacist, throws in his testimony, it only makes things crazier – in the best way possible.
The characters? They’re so fun to follow. Mark Easterbrook is sharp and practical, but what makes him so interesting is how quick he is to put the pieces together. He’s like the Sherlock of this story, and when he finally cracks the case, it’s so satisfying. Then there’s Ariadne Oliver, who’s not only smart but adds some great humor to the mix with her quirky personality.
And let’s not forget Ginger! She’s fierce, brave, and totally pivotal to solving the case. You’ll love her.
Christie’s writing? Absolute magic. The atmosphere is so creepy, especially during moments like Father Gorman’s death. You can practically feel the tension. And when the séance scene at the Pale Horse kicks off, it’s breathtaking. You can picture every eerie detail. It’s like watching a thriller, but better, because your imagination takes over.
And the ending—oh man, it’s wild. Christie wraps up everything in the most brilliant way. You’ll be shocked, but in a “wow, that was perfect” kind of way. It’s unpredictable, but all the clues are there. The Pale Horse really stands out as one of her best works, and honestly, Christie is called the Queen of Crime Fiction for a reason.
This book was fantastic from start to finish. There’s nothing I’d change.
