Wuthering Heights is a classic well loved by a lot of people. Many book adaptations have also been out of this fan-favorite classic. So, here’s a book review of Wuthering Heights.

This is not a love story. Heathcliff and Catherine’s toxic love destroyed their lives, family, and children. Two people madly in love with each other but not meant to be.

Wuthering Heights Book Review

Love is a strange thing. It makes a person blind and dictates their actions. So one of the first things that attracted me to the storyline was the unique description of how fierce love can be.

Firstly, the book’s cover shows two people walking the vast lands with mountains in the distance. In addition, the use of an unclear watercolor painting as the cover is explicitly unique in its own way. The book’s title is written in a small form which signifies the importance of the book as a classic and gives an idea of what the book is about.

I have read multiple romance stories. And they almost have the same storyline every time but what makes this book so different is that the love described in the book is more of an obsession of two people with one another, to the point that one haunts the other, even in death.

” May you not rest as long as I am living!
You said I killed you-haunt me then”

Emily Bronte

A fractured soul shared by both Catherine and Heathcliff.

Talking about the character development in the book, throughout the book, the main characters, Catherine and Heathcliff, become even more hated. Their treatment of the children and manipulating tactics makes them viler. However, they were only best for each other in every way.

“Treachery and violence are spears pointed at both ends; they wound those who retort to them worse than their enemies.”

Emily Bronte

Apart from the star-crossed lovers, there were many other characters whose development got lost in the ever-continuing drama of the former two. For example, Catherine’s nephew Hareton never had a proper childhood due to his alcoholic father and Heathcliff’s influence over Wuthering Heights.

He never knew about his position as the actual heir and the master of the house and was forced to work as a servant in his own home.

Catherine and Edger’s daughter Cathy was confined to Thrushcross Grange’s walls. When she dared to cross those walls, she was manipulated by Heathcliff not only to marry his son but also to forcefully stay at Wuthering Heights for the rest of her life.

The storytelling of this book is markedly flawless. With a moderately paced story, this book has achieved the perfect balance between the story’s pace and writing style.

This book is the best example of gothic literature. It should at least be tried once. Wuthering Heights is one of my all-time favorites, and I can vouch that it is undoubtedly the case with everyone else who has read the book.

Emily Jane Brontë

Emily Jane Brontë was a British novelist and poet, now best remembered for her only novel Wuthering Heights, a classic of English literature. She was the second eldest of the three surviving Brontë sisters, younger than Charlotte Brontë and older than Anne Brontë. Emily published under the masculine pen name Ellis Bell. She caught a chill during her brother’s funeral in September and, having refused all medical help, died of tuberculosis on December 19, 1848, possibly caught from nursing her brother.
