Pride and Prejudice Book Review

Through this novel, Jane Austen touches on various themes like pride, natural goodness, love, and prejudices. So, set in the regency era, the story revolves around identifying the essential goodness behind a person’s prejudices and superficial qualities. In fact, it makes a sharp criticism of the social construct of the time.

Certainly, Pride and Prejudice has all the usual Austen virtues – fine prose, wittiness, social criticism, and amiable characters, with an incredible plotline to stay with the readers beyond the book’s pages.

In the 1800s, the major challenge of love or any relationship was social class and its influence. Pride and Prejudice, written in the early 19th century, straightaway reflects the same. The Bennets were poor, while Darcy’s and Mr. Bingley’s families were more affluent. Also, their developing associations and relationships in this background were the core of all the conflicts in the novel.

“A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.”

Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Austen weaves a web of characters in the plotline. Elizabeth is smart, lively, and attractive. She prides herself on her ability to analyze other people, but she is often mistaken in her conclusions. She prizes a person’s independence of character and places little value on money and social position.

On the other hand, Darcy is a person of great integrity, but his fierce class consciousness makes him appear vain and proud. Elizabeth’s harsh appraisal of him compels him to reassess his behavior and attitude and teaches him to see people more for who they are rather than the status in which they were born.

Apart from these protagonists, the storyline had some other remarkably written characters who added life to Austen’s writing. Mrs. Bennet’s character is crafted to depict society’s mindset at the time, which was to raise one’s social standing. Jane and Bingley provided a different narrative of the idea of love. Though Lydia was sometimes annoying, at other times served as a comedic relief.

“You must learn some of my philosophy. Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.”

Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen herself called this brilliant work her “own darling child.” Her understanding of social class and restrictions on women and men is surely second to none. Her writing style is lighthearted and witty, and she often ridicules people’s selfishness and snobbish nature through comedic scenes.

Direct yet playful, searing yet light, funny yet profound – Pride and Prejudice is a book you will wish to return to repeatedly. It was exciting and fun to follow each character’s journey.

Conclusion

Rating: 5/5
Recommendation: Pride and Prejudice would undeniably make a perfect read for all romance and classic literature enthusiasts.
