Burn This City to the Ground Book Review

Ever stumbled across a book that’s equal parts tragic and hilarious? Burn This City to the Ground brings you exactly that with Samantha and Daniel—a pair who could easily moonlight as a tragic comedy duo, finding dark humor in life’s chaos.

“Just try to realize that the only thing you can control is you.”

Now, let’s talk first impressions. The cover? Gorgeous. It practically calls out from the shelf. But the title? Eh, a bit of a mouthful. Still, don’t judge this one by its name because what’s inside? Gold.

At first glance, the book seems like it’s diving into mental health. But surprise! It swerves into something so much broader and richer. The real standout detail? The author’s connection to George Floyd, whom he met while volunteering at a homeless shelter. Floyd’s presence in the narrative adds a layer of depth that’s unexpected and meaningful.

The story kicks off strong, easing readers into Samantha and Daniel’s world. And what a world it is. Daniel? A walking contradiction—kind, selfless, but sometimes maddeningly irresponsible. Samantha? She’s brash, arrogant, and downright frustrating at times. But, credit where it’s due: she has her moments of clarity and understanding. The beauty of it all is how well the author balances their flaws and virtues, crafting characters that feel utterly real.

And yet, Samantha isn’t for everyone. Her relentless criticism of Daniel hits hard, even affecting his mental health—a tough pill to swallow. It’s moments like these that tug at the reader’s patience, making the experience a tad bittersweet.

On the bright side, the book’s simplicity shines. The language is easy, the pacing is just right—not too rushed, not too slow. You can breeze through it without losing interest. That said, the writing style might feel a little too plain for some. But hey, that’s a minor quibble in the grand scheme.

“When we attempt to control things outside ourselves, we ultimately fail. There will always be a wall that we will hit when we run into someone with more money, more power, more intelligence.”

At its core, this book is a poignant blend of humor and tragedy. It’s raw, real, and leaves a mark.
