Engaging Crime Thriller with Mumbai’s Vibrant Backdrop
“Mousebite” is a gripping crime thriller set in the heart of the bustling city of Mumbai. Chaudhari’s Mousebite revolves around Pandurang Jagtap – a determined inspector of the Mumbai Police Force.
In a city where action never ceases, murders and deaths are not big news. Therefore, when he and his partner, Ulhas Govasi, are assigned to their first murder case – an unassuming death on Mira Road, they do not think much of it.
However, as the investigation begins and clues are analysed, the seemingly undermining footpath murder soon becomes a matter of national security. The inspectors find themselves in the middle of a dire conspiracy: A planned attack on their beloved city, far worse than the ones that had haunted the nation in 1993.
Jagtap, whose worries were simply limited to a possible transfer out of Mumbai, is thrown into the realms of the underworld as his further entanglement in the case leads him to the paths of gangsters, politicians, and the National Investigation Agency.
With everything he knows on the line, including his safety and the ones he loves the most, Jagpat and his team must race against the clock to find the mastermind of the orchestrated events and save the city from its looming fate.
The story weaves together murder investigations, political intrigue, and personal conflicts against the backdrop of Mumbai, building towards a high-stakes climax. Do read the book to find out more.
Book Review of Mousebite
Writing a good thriller is no easy task, contrary to the much pre-conceived that they are. It needs the right amount of suspense, action, and mystery to keep readers on the edge.
And guess what? Chaudhari nails it! With a perfect blend of action, mystery, and a pinch of Bollywood cliché-ness, Mousebite is an ideal read for someone looking for a quick thrill with its Indian elements.
Even before reading the novel, the first thing that caught my eye was the cover page. Although subtle in its detailing, it conveys a lot about the story. From the Mumbai cityscape in the background to the subtle layering of digital binary codes and a looming silhouette, the cover sets the tone for the novel, making readers anticipate what will come next.
The story is an absolute adventure. You get to see everything through the eyes of Pandurang Jagpat, a gritty police officer. The way Chaudhari captures the rawness of his characters and the authentic Mumbaikar lifestyle is just brilliant. He uses local lingo and doesn’t sugarcoat anything, giving you a real sense of Mumbai’s vibe – its dreams and dangers.
What really struck me was how neutral Chaudhari is in presenting his characters. He doesn’t force you to like or dislike anyone right away. Instead, he lets their flaws and strengths shine through naturally, reflecting the real, unfiltered Mumbai.
Now, the book is cleverly structured into 36 chapters, alternating perspectives between Jagpat, government officials, and the bad guys. Chaudhari’s attention to detail is impressive. From vehicle names to precise action procedures and medical terms, he paints a vivid picture that keeps you glued to the pages.
Using Mumbai as the backdrop was a genius move. Chaudhari describes the city so vividly that you feel like you’re right there with Jagpat. The city morphs to match the characters’ emotions and situations perfectly, from the lively buzz of Daradar to the narrow, dim streets of Dharavi.
While the book is packed with Indian essence, it does dip into Bollywood clichés now and then. Some parts were predictable and felt a bit overused, making the plot familiar at times. The dialogues could get a bit tricky to follow with all the detailing, which sometimes interrupted the flow of action. Relying heavily on Jagpat’s perspective might have limited the storytelling a bit.
Still, with witty dialogues and honest character portrayals, “Mousebite” offers a conventional thriller with a fresh twist. If you love Robin Cook or the Jason Bourne series, this book is right up your alley.
Oh, and here’s a fun tidbit: The series is called the Mumbai PJ series. PJ stands for Pandurang Jagtap, our protagonist. Isn’t that clever?
