Book Review of Misery by Stephen King (Spoiler Free) – Favbookshelf

This article provides a spoiler-free summary and review of the book Misery by Stephen King.

Of all Stephen King’s books, Misery has the darkest storyline. It is not only scary but also depressing. This book is not scary because of its supernatural elements, but what adds to the horror is that it is a psychological fright, making it all the more real and believable.

In the series’ concluding volume, Misery is killed off because Paul has grown tired of her. He has an accident on the way back to New York City. When he wakes up, he discovers that adjacent resident and former nurse Annie Wilkes has saved him.

Annie frequently reads Paul’s “Misery” books and calls herself his “number one fan.” Even though Paul has two seriously broken legs, she refuses to take him to the hospital, caring for him instead with her hoard of food and illegally obtained medications with codeine, on which Paul swiftly develops a dependence.

Paul quickly determines that Annie is mentally ill because she frequently lapses into catatonic episodes and experiences fits of irrational wrath.

After reading “Misery’s Child” and learning of Misery’s passing, Annie abandons Paul in her home for more than two days without providing him with food, water, or painkillers.

Will he be released from the clutches of his number one fan, or would he die in her hands?

Book Review of Misery

From beginning to end, this wild ride of a book is one of Stephen King’s masterpieces!

This story’s realism, in my opinion, is what makes it so compelling.

King dives deep into the minds of his characters, creating a chilling atmosphere that I couldn’t help but get lost in.

The book explores the blurry line fans sometimes draw between reality and the fictional worlds their favorite authors create, and it’s absolutely fascinating.

Even though there are only two main characters, the story is anything but boring.

The novel explores obsession, loneliness, and the power of the relationship between an artist and their audience.

The main character, Annie, is on a downward spiral into madness, and her methods of torture get more horrifying by the minute. She’s one of those characters that’s so crazy you can’t look away. In reality, you never know what you’ll get. Since she is, let’s face it, quite evil, I can’t say that I like her character, but she is intriguing; for starters, the way she leads her life—she isolated herself from society on her small farm with her animals because she didn’t fit in until she met Paul Sheldon.

Honestly, this is my favorite Stephen King book, hands down. It’s disturbing, sure, but it’s the kind of story that sticks with you long after you turn the last page.

Conclusion

Rating: 5 / 5

Recommendation: A must-read work of King’s.
