Review: Becoming by Michelle Obama(Spoiler Free)- Favbookshelf

As a reader, I have always loved reading about strong women. Women are flawed and sensitive at the same time. These stories are very inspirational to me. I have started reading nonfiction memoirs like Becoming by Michelle Obama for this reason alone.

Becoming by Michelle Obama is one such memoir that is a story of a robust and badass woman. In this article, we will be giving a review of the same.

Becoming Book Review

Let me start by saying that Becoming by Michelle Obama completely surprised me in the best way. I expected a solid read, but this memoir went far beyond that. It takes you through her life’s journey, from her upbringing in Chicago to her time as First Lady, while tackling important issues like race, gender, and politics. The way she shares her story is especially striking—her voice is clear and steady, but also incredibly engaging, making the book a compelling and thoughtful read from start to finish.

At fifty-four, I am still in progress, and I hope I always will be.”

Michelle Obama, Becoming

First of all, the cover is perfect. It’s got this simple, smiling picture of Michelle, and the whole thing just screams strength and happiness. It’s not over-the-top or anything, but somehow it still grabs your attention. It’s minimalistic but in a way that’s really classy.

Now, I’ll be honest—I wasn’t expecting much from the writing. I figured it’d be a solid story but maybe a bit “meh” in terms of style. Boy, was I wrong! Her writing is beautiful. Seriously. The way she tells her story sticks with you, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it even after I finished the book.

Now I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child—What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something, and that’s the end.”

Michelle Obama, Becoming

What really got me, though, was how she talks about feminism. She’s so smart about it, especially when it comes to the whole “women competing against women” thing. She never tries to be preachy, but she makes her point in this gentle, thoughtful way. And she’s always acknowledging the women in her life—whether it’s her team in the White House or the women who helped her at home. She doesn’t forget the people who’ve supported her, and I love that.

There are some seriously emotional parts in this book. She dives deep into feelings of grief and loss, and I’m not gonna lie, it made me tear up a few times. It’s really raw and real without being overly dramatic.

If I had to point out one thing I didn’t love, it’s the political side. She definitely holds back on some topics, and there are moments where I was like, “Okay, but tell me more about this!” I wish she had been a bit more blunt when it came to certain political issues. It would’ve added more punch to the book.

Conclusion

Rating- 4/5

Recommendation- Becoming is emotional, inspiring, and beautifully written—just a little light on the politics. Definitely worth a read, especially if you love memoirs that dig deep.

P.s. The audio of the version is an absolute delight; Michelle Obama herself narrates it.
